2021 breckenridge Entrance Spruce up Day

There is a story here to tell for self taught gardeners and yard guys and gals

Our Breckenridge new Encore Azalea plants and new sod got hit hard not by the lame 2019 Winter Season we had, but by the insects it unleashed on them. Do you remember in the Summer of 2020 hearing about a little white winged moth that turned into a grass eating worm monster and was tearing up our neighbor’s yards? Well, that was the first time I ever had to go to war with the Winged Moth turned Sod Worm. Then on top of that, the lace bugs hit the new azaleas. In 2020, I sprayed them with Talstar Pro. They were young azaleas and the damage was already done by then, but at least it was manageable. In 2021 we will need to replace six azaleas that didn’t make it. I thought we would be spared in 2021 with the grass sod problem, but the the sod worms are back in front of the Breckenridge sign. In July 2021, I resprayed both the azaleas and grass with Talstar Pro and hopefully that will keep the bugs in check.

I learned that once you see the little white winged moths flying in and out of the sod and the grass is turning a pal yellow color it’s time to act and act fast. Get some protective gear for your face and skin and spray a solution of Talstar Pro or something similar on the grass and under the leaves of the azaleas. Check out Youtube videos for more information on application.

Hopefully this is not a Never-Ending-Story.

To the few and proud Breckenridge Neighbors that took their time to help spruce up the Front Entrance and make it attractive for the people that drive by everyday, THANK YOU VERY MULCH!!!

Below are a few photos taken that day.

Breckenridge Gets A Face Lift

It was around late February of 2020 when we finally got this project off the ground. I wish I had the foresight to have taken photos of the heavy equipment used to remove the bushes and debris. The azaleas, half of them were huge and in many cases were dying and over twenty-three years old. They were a maintenance pain in the butt and we could not keep then looking like they did back in the day. Anyway, it was a big job getting them out of there, let me tell you. Then on top of that, they accidentally busted the a waterline that no one seemed to know where it originated from including the City of Slidell. Well that caused even more delays.

Eventually it all worked out though. Now the neighborhood has a new entrance that promises to be much easier to maintain and stay more colorful throughout most of the year. We used Encore’s Autumn Amber Azaleas and pine straw with a black weed barrier under the straw. So far no weeds this season.
